Meet Abigail
Abigail Bediako is the visionary founder of Barriers to Bridges and a dedicated single mother to her four-year-old son, whose father has been incarcerated since he was a year old. This absence has presented numerous challenges in raising her son, particularly due to the lack of a father figure. Despite these obstacles, Abigail persevered, overcoming significant adversity to graduate in May 2024 from Howard Community College with an associate degree in criminal justice. She is among the 28% of single parents who attain a college degree within six years. Abigail is continuing her education at the University of Maryland Global Campus, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.
As an advocate for student parents nationwide, Abigail participated in the documentary “Raising Up,” sharing her story to inspire other parents to believe in their potential. Through Barriers to Bridges, she aims to support parents and children facing similar challenges, providing them with resources to overcome their circumstances and pursue brighter futures.
